As Cameron Kyle recovers from his collapse, MI5 scrambles to contain the fallout. New intelligence suggests that the rogue KGB agent may be pursuing a darker plan B: having failed to detonate a nuclear device, he changes tack with an ambitious plan to liaise with a Soviet MI5 mole and between them steal the plans and prototype of a low-yield EMP device. Once ready they will deploy the device at military sites, wiping out communications, grounding aircraft and leaving Britain vulnerable to Soviet infiltration. This, Gordiovsky imagines, will mollify his Kremlin enemies and restore him to a position of power in Moscow – he will be received in from the cold with open arms.
